[ICONS] Nightwish!

Nightwish (+ Anette): 22

01. 02. 03. 04.
05. 06. 07. 08.
09. 10. 11. 12. 1
3. 14. 15. 16.
17. 18. 19. 20.
21. 22.

//Comments are nice.
//Credit to lauriechan
//Textless icons are not bases.

//Do not hotlinking.
//Credit here.

//Images from Nightwish-Italy + Nightwish Spain + Nightwish UK + Nightwish Turkey

Filmini, filmacci e filmoni

21. V for Vendetta

Mette i brividi.

23. The Da Vinci Code

24. The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford

25. The Blues Brothers

26. From dusk till dawn

More info.

“E che me ne frega?
Bella, eh?”
“Fammela provare! E dai!

Uno è già coinvolto in altri miei progetti, l'altro... eccolo qua: Luna Lovegood.

<table
#3 March books

12) The Good Terrorist, Doris Lessing (Amazon)

My thoughts: Doris Lessing proposes to the readers some critical questions: why a good woman like Alice, mother-like and, despite her biases, who acts like a middle-aged housewife, chooses to become a terrorist? Who is a terrorist? The author portrays the group of British radicals psychological rather than political, as so we can have a answer – or more answers – by ourselves.

Rating: 5/5

13) Nicolas Eymerich, inquisitore, Valerio Evangelisti (Anobii)

My thoughts: Valerio Evangelisti is a well-known author in Italy, partly for his attention for the political and social issues (he’s a director of a online journal, Carmilla), partly for the Nicolas Eymerich series. Well, I expect much more from the author. The novel is simple written, with simple characterization, with unpredicted mix between genres (historical and science fiction).
And Nicolas Eymerich is a simply charming character – very ruthless, very challenging, very restless despite the fact he is a Inquisitor and so a protector of the Catholic Church. But the book lacks in some way, probably Evangelisti do not have the guts to drag up the capability of his story.

Rating: 2/5

14) American Gods, Neil Gaiman (Amazon)

My thoughts: Neil Gaiman is a author who can deal with legends, myths and folk stories and turns out the material into wonderful modern stories. For this, and other reasons like his sense of humor and his lonely heroes, I like his work. But American Gods is a ambitious story; not only because it is his first real novel but also because he makes to crash the American culture and style of life against old European, Asian and African mythologies. Some parts are sharp, some are simply boring.

Rating: 3/5

15) The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, Patricia A. McKillip (Amazon)

My thoughts: The key of Patricia McKillip’s art is simplicity. She do not have to write about epic battles or sorcery with special effects and choreographical moves to write a good fantasy novel.
Lovely.

Rating: 5/5

16) Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone, Sophocles (Amazon)

My thoughts: Despite the fact I read the tragedies for a school assignment, I feel intrigued. Old stories are always something powerful and captivating despite their ages.

Rating: 4/5

17) Atonement, Ian McEwan (Amazon)

My thoughts: I like one thing above all: Briony. Her and her representation of author like a god who can control the narration of reality and so the reality itself.

Rating: 4/5

18) Sandman: The Dream Hunters, Neil Gaiman & Yoshitaka Amano (Amazon)

My thoughts: I enjoy much more the art rather than the Gaiman adaptation of a Japanese folk tales. Well, Gaiman seems not at ease with old Japanese folklores. Otherwise this is a special issue for the Sandman 10th anniversary: for fans only.

Rating: 3/5

19) 100 strokes of brush before bed, Melissa P. (Amazon)

My thoughts: This is the most hilarious book (sort of) I’ve read in the past months. I’m still wondering why Melissa P. was so much successful among the young people. The novel is not bad, is simply stupid.

Rating: 1/5

Progress: 19/50

Current reading:
Marie Antoinette: The Journey, Antonia Fraser
Nihal della terra del vento, Licia Troisi

#2 February books

Brief summary: A collection of short stories regarding various scientific topics: atomism, the question of time, the physics paradoxes, and further more. (Amazon.fr)

My thoughts: Me and Physics are not close friends. Nonetheless Étienne Klein writes such interesting matters that I became at least curious rather than bored. I think there isn’t a English edition of this book; I read the Italian version and there is also the French one, of course (the author is a French physicist).

Rating: 2/5

7) The Calling vol 2, Reiko Okano

Brief summary: The second part of the Patricia A. McKillip’s The forgotten beasts of Eld comic adaptation. Sybel is threatened by a mysterious but powerful magician. Is it probably a trap set by King Drede worried by her abilities to subdue animals and people and her friendship with Coren of Sirle?

My thoughts: The second installment is as good as the first one. It is more dark and the characters development finds a unexpected way: Sybel becomes more devious, Drede reveals his true nature and Coren is now satisfied but... an uncertain future is around the corner!

Rating: 5/5

8) The Calling vol 3, Reiko Okano

Brief summary: The last part of Patricia A. McKillip's The forgotten beasts of Eld comic adaptation. Sybel decides to take a leading role in the upcoming war between the rebels of Sirle and King Coren.

My thoughts: Now the series is finished I can say this is probably one of the best fantasy story I've ever read. The plot is rather simple, but it's powerful and incisive to portray the contradiction of the power.

Rating: 5/5

9) Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Patrick Suskind

Brief summary: Set in 18th-century France, Perfume relates the fascinating and horrifying tale of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a person as gifted as he was abominable. Born without a smell of his own but endowed with an extraordinary sense of smell, Grenouille becomes obsessed with procuring the perfect scent that will make him fully human. With brilliant narrative skill Susskind exposes the dark underside of the society through which Grenouille moves and explores the disquieting inner universe of this singularly possessed man. The translation is superb. Essential for literature collections. Ulrike S. Rettig, German Dept., Wellesley Coll., Wellesley, Mass. (Amazon.com)

My thoughts: The book reminds me some 19th-century feuilleton except for some lack of action. Probably the better part is the protagonist: devious, obsessed, obstinate, almost-mad but coherent – the type of character I like the most.

Rating: 4/5

10) A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini

Brief summary: Mariam is the scorned illegitimate daughter of a wealthy businessman, forced at age 15 into marrying the 40-year-old Rasheed, who grows increasingly brutal as she fails to produce a child. Eighteen later, Rasheed takes another wife, 14-year-old Laila, a smart and spirited girl whose only other options, after her parents are killed by rocket fire, are prostitution or starvation. Against a backdrop of unending war, Mariam and Laila become allies in an asymmetrical battle with Rasheed, whose violent misogyny—"There was no cursing, no screaming, no pleading, no surprised yelps, only the systematic business of beating and being beaten"—is endorsed by custom and law (Amazon.com)

My thoughts: The major focus of this book is about the woman condition in Afganistan during the last thirty years. So I find this an appealing topic but I felt a bit disappointed for how Khaled Hosseini turns the most part of events into a pathetic story. No wondering why Spielberg bought the
movie rights to the novel.

Rating: 2/5

11) Ancestors of Avalon, Diana L. Paxson and Marion Z. Bradley

Brief summary: The curtain opens on an Atlantean island just prior to its destruction; most of the novel, however, is set among refugees of the doomed kingdom who make landfall in pre-Christianity Britain. Parallel stories unfold as two lovers separated during the cataclysm, the priest Micail and the priestess Tiriki, establish two settlements and struggle with the need to adjust to a new environment (with native peoples playing a major role) while still honoring their lost civilization's spiritual legacy. (Amazon.com)

My thoughts: Diana L. Paxson is not Marion Zimmer Bradley, I know. Diana L. Paxson probably want to be like her older sister-in-law and menthor, but sadly she does not possess the same sharp way of portraying the feminist (or regarding the femininity) issues. Ancestors of Avalon is a modest novel that follows the same line started by The mists of Avalon. Nothing new.

Rating: 1/5

Count:

11 / 50 books. 22% done!

Current reading:

Obsidian Butterfly, Laurell K. Hamilton (english)
Oedipus The King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone, Sophocles
The Good Terrorist, Doris Lessing

#1 January books

1) The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum

Brief summary: He has no past. And he may have no future. His memory is blank. He only knows that he was flushed out of the Mediterranean Sea, his body riddled with bullets.
But now he is marked for death, caught in a maddening puzzle, racing for survival through the deep layers of his buried past into a bizarre world of murderous conspirators -- led by Carlos, the world's most dangerous assassin. And no one can help Jason Bourne but the woman who once wanted to escape him. (Anobii)

My thoughts: Boring. I think this is like the film, a spy-story full of thrilling moments and adrenaline, but the book is a big flop. The action is good, but the development of characters is quite obvious... and Jason Bourne! What a waste of a interesting character! He is always so tentative that it is incredible he is considered as a dangerous and able spy!

Rating: 1/5

2) The Calling Act 1 by Reiko Okano

Brief summary: Sybel lives alone on a mountain, with only the mythical creatures that her deceased father Ogam summoned for company. Sybel cares for the creatures and shares a type of telepathy with them. However, in the dead of night, a man named Coren gives her a baby to care for. The baby is none other than the child of Rianna, the now deceased queen of Eld, and her dead lover, Norrel... (Summary of The Forgotten Beasts of Eld)

My thoughts: The story is widely based on the novel The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip. Reiko Okano's interpretation is wonderful: the art is amazing! No doubt she won the Tezuka Award for Japanese comics. There's some celtic elements mixed with medieval architecture.

Rating: 5/5

3) The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories by Tim Burton

Brief summary: A collection of various poems about mistif children from the well-known director Tim Burton. He also draw the illustrations wiht his distinctive style. (Anobii)

My thoughts: The book reminds me most of the authors movies such like Nightmare before Christmas or Edward Scissorhands, or his first animation movie, Vincent, that tells the tale of a boy fascineted by the Poe poetry and by the actor Vincent Price. All of poems are about children with funny or odd or almost grotesque physical features. Humoruos but sad. Very Burton-ish.

Rating: 4/5

4) The Children of Húrin by John R. R. Tolkien

Brief summary: The tragic story of Túrin and Niënor, the children of Húrin, the lord of Dor-lómin, who achieved renown for having confronted Morgoth, who was the master of Sauron, the manifestation of evil in the Lord of the Rings. The lengthy and fatiguing battle against Morgoth forms the backdrop for the moving account of the life of Húrin's eldest son, Túrin, a valiant but proud warrior whose all too human frailties augur an unhappy end. (Amazon)

My thoughts: Basically this tale is just the same published in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales with minor editing by Christopher Tolkien. The new edition is a waste of money for the old fans, even if the fine illustrations of Alan Lee, but the tale of Hurin and his children is a powerful epic story, a must for all Tolkien readers.

Rating: 4/5

5) The Chimera by Sebastiano Vassalli

Brief summary: The story of a girl, Antonia, who lived during the 16th century in Italy and was accused to be a witch. This is also an account of the Catholic Church and Italian society during the early years of Counter Reformation. (Amazon)

My thoughts: I fell like reading Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed but Vassalli is more radical and much more pessimistic.

Rating: 5/5

Count: 5/50

Current reading:

Obsidian Butterfly by Laurell K. Hamilton
Ancestors of Avalon by Diana L. Paxson

Io li uso solo come giocattolini nel mio tempo libero.
Tabella: qui.
Nota: il riferimento, chiaro fin dal titolo, è a The Burial of the Dead di T. S. Eliot.

Autore: lauriechan
Fandom: Berserk
Coppia: Serpico/Farnese
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: till human voices wake us
Conteggio parole: 100 (W)

Qualcosa è cambiato, pensarono entrambi, senza saperlo.

Autore: lauriechan
Fandom: Berserk
Coppia: Serpico/Farnese
Rating: PG
Prompt: old habits die hard
Conteggio parole: 100 (W)

Ritorna a casa.

L’ho finito davvero. Ma quanto sono orgogliosa di me stessa.

Titolo: Una questione di fede
Autore: lauriechan
Fandom: Berserk
Coppia: Serpico/Farnese
Rating: G
Prompt: blinded by faith, I couldn't hear all the whispers, the warnings so clear (accecato dalla fede, non ho ascoltato tutti i sussurri, gli avvertimenti così chiari)
Conteggio Parole: 100 (Word)

Berserk - Serpico/Farnese (e tre!)

Titolo: Tentazione
Autore: lauriechan
Fandom: Berserk
Coppia: Serpico/Farnese
Rating: PG
Prompt: the ballroom at midnight (la sala da ballo a mezzanotte)
Conteggio Parole: 100 (Word)

Berserk - Serpico/Farnese

Titolo: Fino alla fine del mondo
Autore: lauriechan
Fandom: Berserk
Claim: Serpico/Farnese
Rating: G
Prompt: to the last syllable of recorded time (fino all'ultima sillaba del tempo stabilito)
Conteggio Parole: 100
